Alresford Pig members either live or work in the Alresford area. Membership is by invitation only. New members may be proposed at any meeting and should normally be known to at least 50% of the membership. A fourteen-day rule applies to prospective members being accepted – time for skeletons to fall out of the cupboard.
There is an annual subscription, payable at the January meeting. The level of subscription and monthly meal charges are set at the January meeting.
Meetings are held monthly on the second Thursday of each month. The November meeting is an Extraordinary Annual General Meeting, where the committee for the following year is elected. The committee consists of a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary. The Vice Chairman automatically becomes the Chairman the following year.
There is no meeting in December; instead there is a Ladies Evening, again typically a black-tie event.
Meetings start at 7:30 p.m. and usually finish around 9:00 p.m. There is a fixed agenda at each meeting, covering all the business of the Association.
Sub-committees, selected by the main committee, deal with the day-to-day business of the Association. The Chairman posts sub-committees in January of each year.
Each regular meeting is followed by a meal at a venue chosen by the Secretary. Meeting and eating arrangements are published alongside the minutes of the previous meeting and distributed to each member by the Secretary. The November meeting is followed by a ‘Black tie’ meal at which the Chairman may invite guests – this normally includes ex-members (the Old Boars).
There is a fixed cost for the monthly meal, which is paid at the start of each meeting and is only payable by those members eating. Members unable to attend a meeting or the meal should let the Secretary know by midday of the Tuesday immediately prior to the meeting.
It is a tradition that members whose birthday falls within the month of a given meeting, supply Port or Brandy after the meal. |
